Chemistry classesRequired CourseworkMost students complete CHEM 211 & 212 (General Chemistry) during freshman year and CHEM 313/315 & 314/318 (Organic Chemistry) during sophomore year. AP Chemistry creditWith an AP Chemistry test score of 4 or 5, a student can receive academic credit for General Chemistry (CHEM 211 & 212). However, it is NOT recommended that a freshman student jump directly into taking Organic Chemistry (CHEM 313/315 & 314/318). To students not majoring in chemistry, they are strongly suggested to take CHEM 211 and 212 and waive the AP credit. Some schools (Johns Hopkins) will not accept any AP credit as a substitute for taking live lecture and laboratory courses; other schools (Maryland) will take AP credit as a substitute for prerequisites. In other words, know the academic requirements for the schools of your choice. Regardless, if one does not waive the CHEM 211/212 credits, by the time the student takes the appropriate standardized test, he/she may be removed from the content of the chemistry section by up to four years. If the student has scored well on the AP exam, it does not hurt the student's GPA to take CHEM 211/212 while it assures admissions committees that the student can handle the coursework. If the non-chemistry-major student decides to take the CHEM 211/212 AP credits, he/she should talk to his/her academic advisor and the Chemistry undergraduate coordinator advisor about taking Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences (CHEM 333 & 334) or Physical Chemistry with Laboratory (331/336 & 332/337) before preparing to take the appropriate standardized tests. If a student is having problems with the calculation and mathematical problem-solving aspects of the General Chemistry classes, assistance is available through the Mathematics Tutoring Center. |
