Health Professions Advising at Mason |

Other QuestionsWhat if I'm out of the normal sequence?Admissions committees want to see quality of scientific preparation. That means they would rather see you get a good grade over the timing you took that class. Whether you take your prerequisite coursework while you were an undergraduate or soon (as you define "soon") after you received your baccalaureate, admissions committes want to be sure you can confidently handle the pace of new information that is typical of a health professions education. Sure you may be a bit out of sequence relative to your classmates in the application cycle, but this isn't a competition to see who finishes first. This process is about your preparedness for a health professions career, and everyone takes a different journey to reach his/her goal. I took my prerequisite courses a "long time ago," and I had horrible grades. Now I'm back and I am taking classes at Mason. What are my chances? There is not a formulaic answer, but suffice to say that your more recent history and dedication to your studies is viewed very positively. But you need to know how to address questions that ask about your past coursework and how you've changed since then. I am about to graduate and I realize I want to go to a health professions program. Is it too late? It's never too late to apply if you develop yourself as a qualified candidate. If you are a science major, consider taking a master's degree program or non-degree continuing education class schedule. Graduating non-science majors should also look into postbaccalaureate programs that specifically are designed to give you more scientific exposure that most science majors have had. But I cannot emphasize the importance of taking directed steps towards your goal of being a health professional. Volunteer or part-time experience in a health care environment is critical to your knowledge that this is the career path for you.
