Health Professions Advising at Mason

Delayed Applicants and Reapplicants

Introduction

This section complements the Information for Applicants section. Please refer to that section for questions on the application process.

The median age for an individual joining a health professions graduate program is between 24 and 26, so there are many applicants who apply after they have completed their bachelor's degree.

The reasons that one should delay an application or reapply are many (read "Why I wasn't offered") though it usually boils down to these few needs or concerns:

  • Gain credibility to handle a medical curriculum by taking additional science and laboratory coursework.
  • Exposure or immersion in a health care environment or in a human service environment.
  • Additional mentoring and support from advisors and training professionals.
  • Personal circumstances and factors (like earning some money to help pay for your education).
  • Admissions factors.

There are many options you can take in your transitional years from the completion of your baccalaureate degree to your next step towards entering a health professions program. But you need to be sure that you have a directed plan and the internal motivation to execute it. Look at all of the pages listed on the right sidebar before setting up an appointment with the Health Professions Advisor.
