Research OpportunitiesResources for applicants to MD/PhD (or similar) programsStudents who are motivated to basic science or "bench to bedside" translational research may be interested in applying for combined degree research programs. A few MD/PhD programs are NIH-sponsored programs known as the Medical Scientist Training Program. Because these programs will completely pay for both the medical and graduate tuition for study, applicants tend to be very competitive (average MCAT is 34, GPA is 3.70). Overall the students in these programs take 6-7 years to complete their two degrees. Please read the following article posted on ScienceCareers (Is there an M.D./Ph.D. in my future?). A similarly named workshop/seminar can be found on the NIH Training website. Program directors in these MD/PhD programs meet regularly and post information of interest on their National Association website. Both advisors and prospective applicants should review the information. National coordination does not yet exist for similar programs for osteopathic/research degrees (DO/PhD) or dentistry/research degrees (DDS/PhD), but individual schools may have such programs. Do some homework on these programs. |
