Health Professions Advising at Mason

University Career Services

Students who wish to become members of the health professions are strongly advised to seek volunteer, internship, and significant career opportunities in the sciences and health fields to affirm their dedication to the profession, to become informed of the true practice of health care, and to build a foundation of skills and knowledge that will assist them throughout their careers.

Health professions schools are seeking students with "real world" maturity and experience. The average age of matriculants to health professions programs is between 24 and 26 years old. Students with outstanding academic records are not always accepted immediately after receiving the baccalaureate degree. Consequently, it is extremely important that seniors also consider career opportunities after graduation that enhance their chances for admission.

Advisors at University Career Services develop programs to help all Mason students and alumni seek internship and paid employment. They also have a list of resources of interest to students pursuing health careers. Career Advisor Gemma Scallon advises students in the life sciences or those seeking employment in the biological or biomedical field. She also provides career and job information on the College of Science website.
