General Advice for "Premed Students"
Orientation Checklist
- Browse through and read sections of the Health Professions Advising website. A lot of the questions you may have probably pop up in one of our many pages.
- Fill out the Welcome Week survey (see that green box on the left?) when available.
- Meet with department advisor and Academic Advising Center regarding class schedule and planning:
- Understand the general education requirements and any class prerequisites for degree completion
- Decide on using or waiving AP or IB credits (see specific sections under Required Courses)
- Begin taking your chemistry coursework sequence (CHEM 211-212). One can take BIOL 213 either in the fall or spring semester. If you have not taken AP Biology in high school, consider taking BIOL 103 in the fall then BIOL 213 in the spring.
- Take the Math Placement Test. You must be comfortable at least with college algebra to take the required introductory physics and chemistry coursework. If not, enroll in the relevant coursework at the Mathematics Tutoring Center and consider taking additional math courses.
- Read the Premedical Students' Guide to Preparing for Medical Programs from University Career Services. Also read the online resource page for your major that UCS also publishes.
- Read the Predental Student Timeline from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.
