Health Professions Advising at Mason

Non-traditional students

There are a number of Mason students who do not fit the traditional student mold. Believe it or not, the health professions graduate programs are interested in you.

Mason does not have a formalized postbaccalaureate program, but we do offer an opportunity to get a second bachelor's degree through the Bachelor in Individualized Study.

All applicants must have a solid foundation in the sciences and personal dedication to serving humanity. If at all possible, find yourself an opportunity to volunteer in a clinical setting to be sure that the lifestyle of a doctor is one you (and your family) can handle.

You also should consider the financial burdens that would be involved in beginning medical school.

Fortunately there is a community for non-traditional students. Online there is the OldPreMeds website and forum, a Nontraditional Medical Student website, and a subforum in the Student Doctor Network.

View the AspiringDocs website.

Overall, we have done well placing postbaccalaureate and graduate students into health professional programs as long as the applicants present a competitive profile and have very strong letters of recommendation.
