Sophomore Year
This general checklist revised from the Timeline for Application/Admission in the AAMC's Medical School Admissions Requirements. This checklist can be modified as needed.
Sophomores should meet with their departmental advisor and/or the Academic Advising Center at least once during the year, with additional meetings as necessary.
Sophomores who plan to apply to early admissions programs must complete the pre-application process. These and other sophomores who are interested in competitive summer programs should meet with the Health Professions Advisor once during the year.
Fall Semester
- Maintain academic performance in coursework.
- Pay attention to announcements from Health Professions Advisor.
- See if you are eligible to apply for the Early Selection Program at George Washington University, and discuss with Health Professions Advisor before October if you are.
- Intended dental applicants should review the ADA's Career Resources Page.
- Intended medical applicants should review the AAMC website on "Considering a Career in Medicine" and the Application Process (as it
relates to the allopathic application process).
- Investigate eligibility to become a full member of Alpha Epsilon Delta (premedical honor society).
- Other intended health professional applicants and combined degree applicants should refer back to Explore Health Careers to the links to the appropriate national professional societies' career resources pages.
- If you have not done so, consider your options to declare a major with additional minors or certificates if interested.
- Visit University Career Services to investigate and pursue volunteer or paid internships opportunities in a health care or research environment.
- Investigate eligibility to participate in summer programs targeting students interested in health professions careers. Ask faculty or administrators as possible references. Consult with Health Professions Advisor if eligible.

- Review personal budget and finances. Evaluate eligibility for the AAMC Fee Assistance Program.
- Assess writing and oral communications skills.
- Identify your motivations for pursuing a health professional career.
